BHCFA Report

Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association Report

The Beach Haven Charter Fishing association will be starting its highly popular Junior Mates Program on Thursday, June 22. Normally, the sessions are held both out in the field and at the Maritime Museum on Dock Road in Beach Haven.

However, due to a scheduling conflict, the first class will be held at The Beach Haven Marlin & Tuna Club which is located at 420 N. Pennsylvania Ave in Beach Haven. Any interested teenagers are urged to attend the session which will begin at 7pm.Questions can be answered by calling Captain John Lewis at 609-670-5980.

The fishing action for black sea bass on the inshore wrecks and reefs continues to be very good. Captain Ray Lopez of the “Miss Liane” had Rich Hamburg and his two grandchildren out for a day of bottom fishing. The group had nonstop action with over 60 feisty sea bass boated. The group took six nice fish home for dinner. Captain Ray reports he is also pleased at the fluke action thus far.

Captain Dave Kreines of the “Byte Me” has had a couple of bay fluke trips recently. Last Saturday he fished alone on a “scouting mission” that resulted in just a couple of short fish. On Monday he had Mike Delin and his father out on a half day trip and the pair boated two nice fluke of 20 and 21 inches along with a few shorts and a skate. The pair of anglers was celebrating the elder Delin’s birthday, and they are already eager to return for more action.

The offshore bite has started with some nice tuna being boated already including some bigeyes over 200-pounds. In addition, there are reports of some big mako and thresher sharks in the area.

Fluke, Bluefish, Striped Bass, Weakfish and Sea Bass… Soon we’ll add sharks and tuna to the list. Late May and June is prime time Jersey sharking. It’s time to gear up and get out. The bluefish are still around in strong numbers so there’s time left to gather primo mako baits. Positive reports from anglers off land and in the boat catching blues in the bay, inlet and ocean. There’s reports of inshore bluefin tuna in our waters. We just saw a photo of a big one caught as well as a monster mako. Just today we heard about the first local boat who got into the yellowfin tuna. It’s time to get on the search.
Yesterday afternoon there was a fun bite off of the mid-island surf. A number of anglers got into fish on bunker. Both bass teen sizes and blues were caught. Also from the surf… fluke! Beach fluke fishing with Gulp is good. Bucktail with teaser is the ticket. We heard about a couple big fish breakoffs… sounds like the sand tigers might have showed up.

Jake Bowles reported a great day fluke fishing the back bay yesterday. He got 30 shorts, two keepers with the largest 21 inches.

We another great sea bass report. The inshore reefs and wrecks have some nice fish on them. Here is a hump-back Pat D. caught this morning.

Here’s a report from Redman and crew who took second place aboard the Ten X. “We trolled up this one just north of the Seaside Pier on a #4 Green Tony Maja Bunker Spoon. Shortly after a whale popped up and swam under the boat. All four rods trolling rods went off. What a disaster. Fortunately we got a nice one.”

 

 

 

 

Here’s the weekly fishing report from the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association written by Jim Hutchinson Sr.

Memorial Day weekend is here, and the boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are in pursuit of striped bass, bluefish, and the newly opened season for summer flounder. It appears the weather will be decent for some serious angling.

Captain Ray Lopez of “Miss Liane Sportfishing” along with mate Max Goldman had the Brian Lahullier party from Toms River out front for a taste of the spring striper run, and bass weighing 35 and 42.1 pounds were boxed after busting bunker spoons in 65-feet of water off the Ferris wheel at Seaside. On another day with a very sporty scene in the ocean, it was a troll with Clarke spoons with the Harrison charter from Bordentown, and eight good size blues came over the gunwales.

Capt. Lindsay Fuller on the “June Bug” reports that he and his crew brought the boat north from Wanchese, NC, near Oregon Inlet, where she spent much of the winter getting some needed repairs done along with some upgrades. While they did not fish on the way north, they did keep track of what they saw on their new onboard top-of-the-line Garmin electronics suite. Captain Lindsay was able to identify bait pods as deep as 15,000 feet deep with attacking game fish and saw sizable schools of Striped Bass as they came north. The new electronics allow the crew to pre-search various areas for inshore species as fluke, sea bass, Tog, bonita, etc., are all clearly seen, and the structure in which they are living was clearly tracked.

The 2017 Jr. Mate schedule is now posted on the BHCFA’s web site. As in other years most of the sessions are hands on. Some changes in the curriculum have been made in response to requests from the mates and some of the captains. Classes will start on Thursday, June 22, with registration and an overview of the fisheries, and work on knot tying. Any youngsters 13 and older who would like to become involved in the Junior Mate’s Program can find information and registration materials on the BHCFA website.

LBI Fishing Report May 5, 2017

The bass and blues are here and the crew at the shop are finding them. If you want to go, get out and enjoy some fishing this weekend. The wind is face on in the surf, straight onshore. On the bayside it is at your back.

Early this morning, store staffer Joe C. caught three bass bucktailing. Joe fished picked to fish the bay side. He said some small bass popped back up where bluefish recently dominated.

Last night store staffer Blake poked around and found some bass on the bay side. He only hooked one, but managed to raise a few.

Store staffer Rob Vallone got ’em good yesterday and then again this morning. His buddy got a couple bass.

Here’s a couple other reports…

Rocking Rick Wieland stopped in today for more hooks. While here he reported the mid-island surf is loaded with bluefish. “Every cast! Blues from 7 to 17 pounds!”

Jason Hoch stopped in this evening and said yesterday was on. “I got bait late and hit it. They were on the chew right to dark and then it shut off.”

Joe Medica took his son Tyler out to the jetty yesterday. They reported, “Absolute Bedlam!!!” It’s awesome to see a grom tight to a fish with good form. Here’s Tyler Medica locked into a gator blue on the Barnegat Light Jetty.

Pressure is dropping!

The high is moving off and a low is coming. Looks like its hanging out for the weekend and we’ll be looking at stiff winds and rain. Awesome fishing weather!!! Just in time because some nice fish just showed up.
Today we got word from a couple boat anglers who trolled up some nice fish in the twenty to thirty pound class. Speaking of nice fish…
Yesterday Cody Schmutz got a good striped bass off of the surf on clam. He reported, “Got my fair share of blues. Now I’m off to find some cow bass this spring!” Gonna have to say that’s a good start. It’s the best bass we’ve seen off the surf this spring.
 
Other surf news…
Store staffer Robbie Vallone gave us heads up… “Blues from 5 to 15 plus pounds every cast! It’s ridiculous!!!” Bill Head stopped in a picked up his new rod. He just messaged us, “The rod is a beast total rope session with blues right now. Caught 9 and ran out of bait.”
Arnold Manresa sent us a photo this morning of a nice bluefish he caught off of the Island’s surf.
Timothy Swiggard sent in a photo of a 32″ bass he caught off of the mid island surf on bunker.
The bay is still active with fish, both bass and blues.
Gary from Farias got a nice gator bluefish fishing a mid-island bulkhead.
Chester B. stopped in for fresh line today. He reported hammering the blues today and yesterday. “In the windy conditions, I fished the bay. The blues wanted bunker chunks. There were some good size ones too. I got my first fluke of the season. It also went for a bunker chunk on a 5/0 hook. The bluefish are packed with jumbo spearing.”
Store staffer Blake and I had a good morning meeting on the water with Rich Lowe our Grundens factory rep. We covered some ground and found an occasional bluefish. We only managed three blues in the short morning session. It would have been nice to fish into noon but we all had obligations. For us it was a semi slow morning but the number of blow ups and follows to the boat made it exciting. All in all it was a good morning “taking care of business”.
We find out later our friend Todd Luber was hot on the bite and wasn’t fishing far from us. He did much better than us. Here’s his report, “Bass love Stillwater! Five bass and a few blues ion the bay!!!!
Steve Warren stopped in this afternoon to pick up some fresh bunker and sign up for the Simply Bassing Surf Fishing Tournament. While here he shared his morning report. “I had a fun morning on the boat in the bay. Blues on poppers and swimming plugs.”
It’s game time! There’s fish here and they are on the chew.

AC Boat Show Striped Bass

acboat-show-2I presented at the Atlantic Boat Show this past Friday and had close to 40 people attend my seminar on the”Basics of Striped Bass Fishing”.  I love fielding questions and hopefully help more anglers improve their opportunities of catching.  It was nice to see a lot of anglers and walking the isles of the boat show.  I did get to speak with the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA), who feels that New Jersey will most likely stay “status quo” on Fluke regulations as 2016.  Again, we will have to wait to see what the higher ups/state/federal level decide, but hopefully it’s our way.

We are only a few weeks away from splashing the “Jenny Lynn” for another season and have already started booking our May Striped Bass trips.  We have kept the rates the same as last year!

AC Boat Show Striped Bass Seminar

I hope everybody has enjoyed a very mild winter for our region which should translate into some early Striped Bass action.  I’m putting some finishing touches on the vessel for the 2017 season and will have it serviced over the next couple weeks so that it’s ready for an early splash.  It’s tentatively looking mid to end of March.  Fluke season is up in the air as we are waiting to see if the state of NJ will comply or not comply with federal recommendations/mandates.  It looks as it will either be 18in or 19in minimum, but would could really stink is a reduced season in terms of days.  Regardless, I’m still prepping the light-tackle Fluke gear for some of the fantastic backbay action in that occurs every May & June.  I have made several upgrades over the winter season, including a bunch of brand new Penn Spinfisher V 4500s added to our arsenal.  Fisherman’s HQ has them in stock – great reels for the price!!

The Atlantic City Boat show starts next week (March 1 through March 5) and I will be presenting a 1 hour seminar on Striped Bass fishing on March 3, 2017 at 4pm, so hope to see some of you there.

Spring is here!

The calendar doesn’t agree, but all of the signs say so. In the air, on the ground and in the water!!! The unseasonable warmth has things popping up. As of late anglers are dusting off their gear and taking to the water. Why not capitalize on the beautiful weather and winter hold overs?
While some enjoy picking at the linesiders all winter long this warm weather really has the masses out and about. While the spots are busy, the local boys are having a blast with talk about “stellar fishing, bass on almost every cast and endless doubles.” The good news is these fish have been here all winter and more will show as time goes on. There’s plenty of small bass on the chew. Take a look at the 10 day, the weather looks to stay mild for a good stretch of time.
Just a heads up both tog and porgy fishing close on Feb 28th. Tog re-opens April 1st with a four fish bag limit at 15 inches. Porgy aka Scup does not re-open until July 1st.
Winter flounder season is basically here, opening March 1st with two fish at 12″.  A week or two ago, we got some solid reports from commercial fike netters who had a couple days of great catches. Both size and quality so it’s proof that some nice flatties are around. The commercial fike net season closed on Feb 20th so now it’s time for the recreational rod and reel guys. Over the years it has been best to start out in the deep bay (near the bridges) then work out towards the inlets as time goes on and the waters warm. This year should be interesting to find out where they are holding with the unseasonable warm weather.
On the bait side of things, we have frozen clam, freeze dried worms (blood & sands) as well as clam chum. We do not have live bloodworms and we do not have live clam. The availability date is unknown.
