Reel Reaction Charters – Fishing Report Barnegat Light

There are definitely Fluke in the backwaters, but they are biting a little sporadic as I have picked up a few at some of my choice holes.  But then they shut off rather quickly, the good news is that it should only pick up as we head into June.  We did not sail on Sunday due to the 25-30knot E/NE winds, we will be back at it during the week and weekend.  I do have weekday afternoons available for backbay Fluke and this week looks pretty good.

This past weekend I had return client Erik Hansen of Doylestown with his two buddies, Rodger Gensec and Michael Miele. We started working the backwaters for Fluke and the trio caught over 25 shorts with 4 keepers to 23 inches. We lost a nice fish boat side that was estimated at 26-28 inches (7-8 pounds). We finished the trip working the jetty with fresh bait for Striped Bass and the guys caught 3 Stripers to 26.5 inches. A great day on the water!!

Next, I had return client Mike Galindo out on a 4hr Fluke/Striped Bass charter with his two boys, Bennet and Mason. We worked the backwaters first and I would’ve thought the Fluke bite would’ve been better, but it was a tough bite today. The trio ended with one solid 22 inch keeper amongst the 20+ shorts. All the Fluke were caught on bucktails. We ended the trip fishing the Barnegat Inlet to release a 23-inch Striped Bass and Bluefish to 24 inches. We had a few run-offs that were mostly likely short bass. Tough day, but the guys still hit a Barnegat Bay slam (Bluefish, Striped Bass, Fluke).

I will be running weekday charters (3pm to 7/8pm) until school gets done on June 21st, then we are 7 days a week (morning/afternoon). If interested in booking a charter, book our site (www.reelreactioncharters.com) or call/text 609-290-7709.   As always, we use the highest quality gear and everything is included: gear, tackle, fish-cleaning, and ICE!  It’s “no worries” fishing.  Just come aboard and FISH.

Reel Reaction Charters – Fishing Report Barnegat Bay

Our spring has been slow due to weather cancellations and some family obligations, but we are back in the swing.  The trophy bass bite has been sporadic at best, with some anglers hooking into decent bass though putting in a lot of time.  Some anglers have been running to Manasquan inlet and further to find bass.  Fluke opened and the bite was pretty solid especially in the backwaters on the western side of Barnegat Bay.  This past week I managed to get on the water a few times:

I had return client Art Diebel and his son Bruce from Allentown, NJ on a afternoon Bay/Inlet Striped Bass charter. We started some areas in the back for Bluefish, but could only raise and hook a lone 3-4 pounder. We headed to the inlet and worked some areas to boat 6 Striped Bass with 1 keeper at 28 inches. We additionally caught another Bluefish on fresh bait. Even though it wasn’t a keeper, 7th grade Bruce caught his 1st ever Striped Bass which was a solid 26-incher. Great afternoon on the water!

Next, I had return client Alison Mack, her brother Jon Mack, and her two 10yr old boys Eoghan and Rogan on a afternoon Opening Day Fluke charter. The crew did a great job for their second time bucktailing, boating over 30 Fluke with 3 keepers. The crew missed a few more keepers, which swam away to live another day. But they did a great job and continued to learn and get better at bucktailing!! Rogan caught his 1st Barnegat Bay short Striped Bass which was promptly returned.

I had return client Mike Pollino, Mary Broerman, and her son-in-law John Krause on a bay Fluke charter. We hit the inlet for Striped Bass, but could only manage Blackfish (released) and Dogfish as the incoming was 49 degrees. We headed to the backwaters and started working some of the same areas as yesterday’s trip. It was a little tougher on the bite today, but the crew managed over 25 Fluke with 2 keepers (19, 21inches) on bucktails.

I will be running weekday charters (3pm to 7/8pm) until school gets done on June 21st, then we are 7 days a week (morning/afternoon). If interested in booking a charter, book our site (www.reelreactioncharters.com) or call/text 609-290-7709.

Reel Reaction Charters – Fishing Report

The season is getting closer, and I’m pretty close to being back in the water.  We will start targeting backwater, light-tackle Striped Bass until the Bluefish arrive in April.  If it’s anything like the last few years, then it should be another EPIC bite on topwaters and poppers.

I saw a bunch of anglers at last week’s Atlantic City Boat show and it was nice to talk fishing. A big thanks to the Recreational Fishing Alliance for booking me to give another Fluke seminar!!  After this weather moves out, I will be finishing the seasonal prep for the Jenny Lynn and splashing in 2 weeks after maintenance from South Harbor. Looking forward to light-tackle Striped Bass!

I have starting booking trips for 2018 season.  If your vacationing on Long Beach Island and have your week, then call (609-290-7709) or book through the reelreactioncharters.com to get the best optimal tidal day.

As always, we use the highest quality gear and is included: gear, tackle, fish-cleaning, and ICE!  It’s “no worries” fishing.  Just come aboard and FISH!!

Reel Reaction Charters – Fishing Report

It’s been sometime, but we closed out the season towards the beginning of December.  December was a busy month with doing all of the normal end of season maintenance, in addition to organizing and running the Barnegat HS Fishing Club’s Fisherman’s Fleamarket during the second week of December.

I can’t believe it’s almost 2018, but I have already made some major upgrades for the 2018 season including: installing a new Lowrance HDS Carbon GPS & Structure scan/CHIRP sonar, adding 8 new Penn 4500 SSV Reels and 8 new G.Loomis rods to our charter arsenal.  I was asked and have joined the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association for the 2018 season (http://www.bhcfa.net) and will be helping out with their Junior Mate program.

This past week I dropped off our 2017 NJ Striped Bass Bonus Permit fishing logs to the Nacote Creek Research Station and was assured by NJ DEP staff that the program will run again for 2018.  This is great news as it still allows a slot fish for the 2018 charters (September thru December).

2018 Fishing Show and Seminar News:  I was asked by On The Water magazine to work the OTW booth for the Garden State Sports Show at the NJ Convention & Exposition Center in Edison, NJ on January 13th, 2018.  If you go, please stop by!

I was asked again by the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA) to present at the Atlantic City Boat show and I will be doing an 45min to 1hr seminar on Bay, Inlet, and Ocean Fluke fishing on March 1st (Time TBD, 4pm?).  I will also be at the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Assoc. booth during the AC Boat show.

We have already started booking for backbay Striped Bass (March) and topwater Bluefish (April), and the charters will start in late March 2018.  If interested in booking a charter, book through the website (reelreactioncharters.com) or call/text 609-290-7709.  As always, we use the highest quality gear and is included: gear, tackle, fish-cleaning, and ICE!  It’s “no worries” fishing.  Just come aboard and FISH.

Reel Reaction Charters – Fishing Report LBI & Barnegat Bay – Striped Bass

The fishing windows have been very narrow, especially when the work-charter schedule is only limited to weekends and a couple weekdays when I’m off from school.  It seems as if every weekend has had blowing winds from the wrong direction – we need some cold air and NW winds.  There are some fish to be had in the ocean (mostly troll bite) and in bay/inlet on both artificials and live bait.  Once we get some good “Striper” weather, it’s going to break wide open!!

This past week I did have a chance to fish a few hours after work for Striped Bass with co-worker Tom Duralek of Manahawkin.  We picked a 29.5 inch Striped Bass on the first drift and thought it was going to be non-stop as the next few drifts produced a couple of run-offs and a big Bluefish.  But the bite slowed to a halt and we moved to a bunch of different areas to only produce a few bumps.

Saturday’s trips (Morning and Afternoon) were rescheduled due to rough ocean conditions, but we were able to fish on Sunday.  I had return client Dave Kaschak of Hazelton, PA along with his 9yr old son Chase, and Jaime Scatton with his 9yr old son Max on a 5hr Striped Bass charter. With rough conditions in the ocean and inlet, they were willing to work the backwaters.  We worked a variety of spots with mostly live and fresh bait. Chase and Max did a great job catching 7 Striped Bass with two fish that were keepers. The Striped Bass ranged from 19.5 inches to 28.5 inches. It was a great day in relatively tough conditions.

Availability:  We have everyday booked the rest of this week (11-6 thru 11/10) weather providing, but I do have Friday 11/10 available for afternoon charter (12pm to Dusk/Dark).  There are a few weekend afternoons available through November and these generally run from 12pm to dusk/dark.  In addition, I do have Thanksgiving morning available, but this will be a shortened trip 630 to 1030am for (1-3 people) $425 which includes 5-7 “live Spot” per person.

If interested in booking a charter, book through the website (reelreactioncharters.com) or call/text 609-290-7709.  Live Spot are included on all of our Fall Striped Bass trips.  As always, we use the highest quality gear and is included: gear, tackle, fish-cleaning, and ICE!  It’s “no worries” fishing.  Just come aboard and FISH.

Reel Reaction Sportfishing Fishing Report

It’s been a little while, but the fishing is starting to heat up as long as the water temperatures keep dropping.  On the charter front, the transitional time is starting to pass and I’m seeing more Striped Bass starting to cooperate although it’s early morning or late evening.  I have been kayaking during the late night hours and have been hooking up regularly on Striped Bass, we just need them to start biting during the daylight hours which will occur as the water temps. drop.  We will start targeting Striped Bass/Bluefish in the next few weeks and through the rest of the season.  On our mid-October, November, and December Striped Bass charters,  we provide “live spot” on every charter which are included at no charge.  Just a reminder, I picked up my allotted 50 Striped Bass Bonus Tags from the state of NJ for the season and we be using them from September through December.  With school in session, I’m running weekends and weekday afternoons starting at 230pm.

This past Friday afternoon I had Jutta Locker and her daughter Jessica from Utica, NY on a 4hr Bay & Inlet trip.  We started working a channel close to the inlet drifting live Peanut Bunker and working soft plastics.  With no takers, we moved to the inlet which was fishable.  We drifted live and fresh baits, and both clients hooked into Blues 7 to 10 pounds.  The bite only lasted about a 1/2 hour, and quickly died as the brown water moved in.  We continued to work different areas getting only subtle bites which were most likely snapper Blues.  The Coast Guard graced us in the last 10 minutes of the charter to perform a routine safety check.  We PASSED!  Nice job by both clients on a rather tough day!

We will start targeting Striped Bass in the next few weeks through the rest of the season.  On our mid-October, November, and December Striped Bass charters,  we provide “live spot” on every charter which are included at no charge.  Just a reminder, We have our allotted 50 Striped Bass Bonus Tags from the state of NJ for the season and we be using them from September through December.  With school in session, I’m running weekends and weekday afternoons starting at 230pm.

Reel Reaction Sportfishing – Fishing Report 9/15

Wow, what a great Fluke season as we put a ton of keepers across the deck of the Jenny Lynn and I would like to “thank” all of my summer clients for making it possible.  The winds and weather have not been so cooperative so far for the month, hopefully it gets better.  September is a transitional month offering cooler water temperatures and signaling the start of the migration.  There are some Albacore and Bonita within distance and we are available to target these the rest of the month.  In October, November, and December, we will be targeting Striped Bass and I provide 20-30 “live spot” on every charter which are included at no charge.  Just a reminder, I picked up my allotted 50 Striped Bass Bonus Tags from the state of NJ for the season and we be using them from September through December.  These tags allow us to harvest 24 to 28 inch Striped Bass.  With school in session, I’m running weekends and weekday afternoons starting at 230pm.

This past week I had repeat client Bruce Connor of Illinois and his daughter Emma of Washington DC on a 5 hr Bay & Inlet charter, which was supposed to be an inlet/ocean trip. With higher than expected winds of 15 to 20 knots, we stayed in the backbay and were only able to work part of the inlet as the conditions were very tough. We didn’t catch a large quantity due to the conditions, but managed Fluke (released due to regulations), Sea Bass (released due to regulations), Sea Robins, Triggerfish, and a 36-inch Bluefish. Great job by both anglers on a very challenging day!!

Lighthouse Sportfishing LBI Report 8/20

Anyone that has seen me present / teach either at a seminar or during my Fishing Barnegat Bay classes have heard me talk about the 3 Ts to successful saltwater fishing. The 3 Ts are temperature; tide; and technique. Although you only truly have control of the last T it is with knowledge and experience that you work the other two to your advantage. After a truly epic July bluefish fishery around Barnegat Inlet seemed to come to an end it took a major rebound Saturday morning. The last two weeks my client or I have had to work hard to land a few blues. Even while seeing them surfing waves, swimming around or following lures they just were not in the mood to feed. Some thought it might be due to them spawning, however, any of the fish kept did not the signs of a fish ready to spawn. I thought it was the water was too warm as some studies show adult bluefish do not feed as actively when the temperature approaches 74. Well, Friday’s strong southerlies were the spark to start the flame. It caused an upwelling dropping the inshore water temperature by 6-7 deg F to around 69. Around sun up Saturday morning the bluefish bite returned with a vengeance. Baits spraying, birds diving and some swirls and breaks made it obvious the feed bags were on. My first cast of a Savage Gear Panic Popper was rewarded with a tail slap and an explosion of a 6-pound blue. I landed around 10 before calling it a session. I do not think I have ever seen so many blues jump as frequently as of late. My suspension is they are well fed and the temperature is in their preferred range.

After hopping off the Debbie M I hoped on board a 33’ Stamas with twin 250’s to guide the owner and some kids to the waters of Barnegat Bay and Inlet and do a little fishing. Although we did not have the best tide we had some good action with short fluke. Switching gears we searched for some weakies and found some spikes to keep the kids smiling. Zack managed a Barnegat Bay slam of fluke, weakfish, and bluefish. This is about the 10th Slam I have put a client on this year. Still have a few slots open for this week whether it is fluke, blues, weaks, sharks and maybe a bass give me a call.

Lighthouse Sportfishing LBI Report

Did a combo trip (off the beach sharking – bay/inlet) Thursday with long time client Bill Hirschberg, his 15-year-old son James and his friend Matt. It was a little bumpy going to where I want to start chumming, but being only a few miles from the inlet and off the beach we made it there in no time. With chum bucket over I started baiting the rods and setting them out. Before I got the third rod out we had a 3’ brown shark swim up the slick right the chum. Pitching a bait it was a swing and a miss but that was fine since a few minutes later there was another shark swimming up to the plate. Pitching the bait, it was a swing and a hit! The first of 6 sharks was hooked up. It was a cute little guy. Yes I know it was a male shark based on the presences of claspers. Most of the sharks were sand bar sharks (aka brown) with the biggest an estimated 40 pounds, but at least one was a Dusky shark (pictured below). A Dusky on a Dusky. Brown and Dusky sharks look very similar. If the first dorsal fin originates over or slightly before free tips of pectoral fins free edge, as seen in the picture, it is a Dusky. If the first dorsal fin originates over or slightly before the pectoral fin insertion it is a Brown. Friday afternoon Larry Hrebiniak and his son Justin were out for a bay fluke trip. With the south wind honking conditions were tough, even in the wind breaks. Fluking was slow with only a few shorts and a fat blue of 10 pounds or more. With summer winding down you have to ask yourself “have I fished enough this summer?’ If the answer is no, I still have a few dates open 😉

Hi Flier Inshore Sharks, Fluke, and Tuna

This is a great stretch of fishing we are experiencing right now. On the inshore scene we are catching brown and blacktip sharks within five miles of Barnegat Inlet. Three to five foot sharks on spinning and light conventional tackle. After a few hours of that, we have been hammering the fluke in the bay. A very high percentage of small fish with some really nice keepers making it into the cooler. You have to catch 30 shorts to put one on ice, but it is steady action.
If you want to go on an adventure, the tuna have moved within 45 miles of the inlet and the upcoming weather for Sunday and Monday looks good. Yellowfin and bluefin mixed together. 20 to 60 pound fish on the troll, chunk, or jig. This is the closest they have come to our inlet all season. We are going to load the boat with slabs of bait, the trolling arsenal, jigging rods and come home with some tuna!
Tomorrow (Thurs), Friday, and Saturday, August 17, 18, and 19, I am going to stay close to shore as there is still some sea condition in the forecast. We will be doing the shark and fluke combo. If the inlet or ocean is too rough, we will just stay on the fluke. Open Boat or Charter, Noon to 6 PM. $175 person for the combo trip, $150 person if we just fluke.
Sunday and Monday, August 20 and 21, we will be headed to the bluewater for tuna. Open Boat or Charter. Leaving at 4AM and returning around 4PM. $300 person.
All Open Boat trips, inshore or offshore, are limited to 4 people max and all fish are shared. Any of these dates can be booked for your own charter, as well. It’s never too late to check availability. You can call right up until “go time”. On inshore charter trips, the headcount is more flexible.
Here’s my boys Nick and Max who jumped on Monday morning for a few hours of shark fishing:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ytb87JNFGQ
We had seven brown sharks in the morning and then we had seven more on the afternoon trip for Mike Fuhrman and his friends. We came back in the bay, caught a ton of short fluke as well as a 19 incher and a 25 inch, 6 1/2 pounder, that Erin Foose of Cumberland, MD is holding in the pic.
