Reel Reaction Charters – Fishing Report

The season is getting closer, and I’m pretty close to being back in the water.  We will start targeting backwater, light-tackle Striped Bass until the Bluefish arrive in April.  If it’s anything like the last few years, then it should be another EPIC bite on topwaters and poppers.

I saw a bunch of anglers at last week’s Atlantic City Boat show and it was nice to talk fishing. A big thanks to the Recreational Fishing Alliance for booking me to give another Fluke seminar!!  After this weather moves out, I will be finishing the seasonal prep for the Jenny Lynn and splashing in 2 weeks after maintenance from South Harbor. Looking forward to light-tackle Striped Bass!

I have starting booking trips for 2018 season.  If your vacationing on Long Beach Island and have your week, then call (609-290-7709) or book through the reelreactioncharters.com to get the best optimal tidal day.

As always, we use the highest quality gear and is included: gear, tackle, fish-cleaning, and ICE!  It’s “no worries” fishing.  Just come aboard and FISH!!

Reel Reaction Charters – Fishing Report

It’s been sometime, but we closed out the season towards the beginning of December.  December was a busy month with doing all of the normal end of season maintenance, in addition to organizing and running the Barnegat HS Fishing Club’s Fisherman’s Fleamarket during the second week of December.

I can’t believe it’s almost 2018, but I have already made some major upgrades for the 2018 season including: installing a new Lowrance HDS Carbon GPS & Structure scan/CHIRP sonar, adding 8 new Penn 4500 SSV Reels and 8 new G.Loomis rods to our charter arsenal.  I was asked and have joined the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association for the 2018 season (www.bhcfa.net) and will be helping out with their Junior Mate program.

This past week I dropped off our 2017 NJ Striped Bass Bonus Permit fishing logs to the Nacote Creek Research Station and was assured by NJ DEP staff that the program will run again for 2018.  This is great news as it still allows a slot fish for the 2018 charters (September thru December).

2018 Fishing Show and Seminar News:  I was asked by On The Water magazine to work the OTW booth for the Garden State Sports Show at the NJ Convention & Exposition Center in Edison, NJ on January 13th, 2018.  If you go, please stop by!

I was asked again by the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA) to present at the Atlantic City Boat show and I will be doing an 45min to 1hr seminar on Bay, Inlet, and Ocean Fluke fishing on March 1st (Time TBD, 4pm?).  I will also be at the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Assoc. booth during the AC Boat show.

We have already started booking for backbay Striped Bass (March) and topwater Bluefish (April), and the charters will start in late March 2018.  If interested in booking a charter, book through the website (reelreactioncharters.com) or call/text 609-290-7709.  As always, we use the highest quality gear and is included: gear, tackle, fish-cleaning, and ICE!  It’s “no worries” fishing.  Just come aboard and FISH.

Reel Reaction Charters – Fishing Report: Ocean and Barnegat Bay

The fishing continues to be very good, except for the gusty winds.  It seems this fall we have been hampered with winds to 30-40 knots, but we still made it out on some of those windy days to put some fish in the box.  We have been hitting the ocean, the inlet, and some areas in the back when conditions are right to find some nice quality fish to 27 pounds.

I plan on running a Thanksgiving morning trip, 630am to 1030am, which can be full charter or open boat $150 per person which includes 6-7 spot per person).  Open boat trip will require at least 3 to run.  Call or Text: 609-290-7709

Here’s the run down for our last few trips:

With good tide in the afternoon, I had co-workers Tom Duralek and Paul Covine on a shortened Striped Bass trip.  We only needed an hour as we limited with 6 fish (3 over 31 inches and 3 bonus tagged fish).  The guys played catch and release until dusk.

I had Scott Fritz of Long Beach Island and his two buddies Peter Hempf and George Wolansky on a Striped Bass Charter. The crew did miss a few fish early, but quickly got the hang of it. We worked a variety of areas and the guys put 4 keepers in the box releasing 12 others. Nice work on a rather tough day in terms of winds and conditions.

I had Mike Galindo and his father in law Bob Stovakiewicz on a Striped Bass charter. We had good intel and started working the ocean front, but the Stripers were a little slow from the day’s previous feed. We finally found a school of feeding fish with about an hour left in the trip. The duo went 2 for 4 with two 20 pound fish. It was Bob’s 73rd birthday and he caught his biggest striper to date. We also had some whales working in the area! Awesome job!

I had Dom Diblasio, Joe Guarino, Jacob Sestak, and John Busca of Lockheed Martin on a Striped Bass trip. Again, we worked the ocean and had tons of bunker and whales. But unfortunately the Striped Bass had lockjaw with only 2 run-offs and we worked 15 miles of ocean. With only about a half hour left in the trip, we worked the bay and the guys went 2 for 4 with live bait. They boxed two Stripers at 28inches and 24inches. Tough trip, but at least we eeked out a couple of fish.

I had Mike Pollino of Bensalem, Mary Broerman, and John Krause of Warminster on a Striped Bass charter. We fished the ocean looking for bigger Striped Bass, but they were a little finicky. John caught his biggest Striped Bass to date at 40 inches and 27 pounds. Mike and Mary released a few in the 23 range on the S&S Bucktail jig and live bait, before keeping a 26 inch bonus tag fish. Great job!

I have availability for the following remaining dates:  Wednesday 11/29 [1130am to 430pm]; Friday 12/1 [1130am to 430pm], and December 3rd Morning or Afternoon.

If interested in booking a charter, book through the website (reelreactioncharters.com) or call/text 609-290-7709.  Live Spot are included on all of our Fall Striped Bass trips.  As always, we use the highest quality gear and is included: gear, tackle, fish-cleaning, and ICE!  It’s “no worries” fishing.  Just come aboard and FISH.

Reel Reaction Charters – Fishing Report – LBI & Barnegat Bay

The fishing has been pretty good as we are getting fish on every trip, some trips we are hooking up to 30 fish.  But it all depends on their feeding and tide.  I have been busy on the water and had little time to update my “sent-in” reports, so here’s the rundown:

I had return client Ross Alber, his brother Rich and son Riley, along with Zach Blum on a 5hr Striped Bass charter. We started working the backwaters and Zach hooked a real nice fish which he fought for awhile. The hook popped due to the strong current and winds as it got close to the boat. On the next drift, Rich caught a 31-inch Striped Bass. With the tide beginning to rip, we tried some other areas and released a few in the 19-21 inch range. We moved closer to the inlet and hooked a few fish in the new area. Ross struck first with a 30 inch Striper, followed by Rich’s biggest to date a solid, 36-inch 20 pound Bass. The guys kept 4 for the table and they did an awesome job in pretty tough conditions.

I had return client Ross Alber for his second trip this week and his buddy Ray on a 5hr Striped Bass charter. We started working the backwaters, and hooked 6 fish pretty quickly, keeping 4 for the table in the first 40 minutes of the trip. With the tide negatively influencing the bite, we worked closer to the ocean with both artificials and live bait. The bite was on and the guys hooked fish on every drift, keeping 2 more for the table while releasing 30 to 33 inch fish. With over 2.5 hours left in the trip and a limit of Striped Bass, we worked some of the backwaters with small artificials and poppers. 6 keeper Striped Bass and a great day on the water!

It was a cold start today in terms of temperature, but it had no effect on the fish as we limited out in 1hr and 18 minutes. I had Chad Mackey, Joe Bumbarger, and Brad Bingham of Reading, PA on a 5hr Striped Bass charter. The guys worked hard for the entire trip, and ended with 8 fish to 34 inches including the Captains fish, they released another 20 that were in the keepable range. Awesome trip and epic bite working live baits.

In the morning, I had Dan Unger and his son Danny of Shipbottom, NJ on a 4.5hr Striped Bass charter. We fished close to home and found some Stripers on the different tide. It was a slower pick, but Danny did catch a solid 32inch Bass along with a couple of bonus fish. We released a few more slot fish. With the tide almost dead and our time window narrow, we did troll for about an hour with no luck. The father & son team went home with 3 Stripers.

In the afternoon, I had Brett Sewing of VT and his buddy Sam Slinskex of NY on a 4.5 hr Striped Bass charter. The afternoon was much better with the tide and we got right on the fish. It was a fish on every drift, and Brett and Sam limited with 5 fish in about 6 drifts (including Capt.’s fish). We worked the remaining of the trip releasing fish 25-inches to 31-inches. A long day on the water, but great way to end the weekend!

Availability:  11/23 Thanksgiving morning 630-1030am, 11/25 afternoon, 11/26 afternoon, 11/27 1130am to 4pm, 11/29 1130am to 4pm, 12/3 Morning or Afternoon;  Afternoon trips will run from 12pm to dusk.

Reel Reaction Charters – Fishing Report LBI & Barnegat Bay – Striped Bass

The fishing windows have been very narrow, especially when the work-charter schedule is only limited to weekends and a couple weekdays when I’m off from school.  It seems as if every weekend has had blowing winds from the wrong direction – we need some cold air and NW winds.  There are some fish to be had in the ocean (mostly troll bite) and in bay/inlet on both artificials and live bait.  Once we get some good “Striper” weather, it’s going to break wide open!!

This past week I did have a chance to fish a few hours after work for Striped Bass with co-worker Tom Duralek of Manahawkin.  We picked a 29.5 inch Striped Bass on the first drift and thought it was going to be non-stop as the next few drifts produced a couple of run-offs and a big Bluefish.  But the bite slowed to a halt and we moved to a bunch of different areas to only produce a few bumps.

Saturday’s trips (Morning and Afternoon) were rescheduled due to rough ocean conditions, but we were able to fish on Sunday.  I had return client Dave Kaschak of Hazelton, PA along with his 9yr old son Chase, and Jaime Scatton with his 9yr old son Max on a 5hr Striped Bass charter. With rough conditions in the ocean and inlet, they were willing to work the backwaters.  We worked a variety of spots with mostly live and fresh bait. Chase and Max did a great job catching 7 Striped Bass with two fish that were keepers. The Striped Bass ranged from 19.5 inches to 28.5 inches. It was a great day in relatively tough conditions.

Availability:  We have everyday booked the rest of this week (11-6 thru 11/10) weather providing, but I do have Friday 11/10 available for afternoon charter (12pm to Dusk/Dark).  There are a few weekend afternoons available through November and these generally run from 12pm to dusk/dark.  In addition, I do have Thanksgiving morning available, but this will be a shortened trip 630 to 1030am for (1-3 people) $425 which includes 5-7 “live Spot” per person.

Reel Reaction Charters – Fishing Report – Albie Mayhem

With my son’s fall baseball schedule winding down, weekends are finally in play as the fish have started moving.  The recent cooler nights have chilled our surrounding waters down and the bay/inlet Striped Bass are starting to become active.   We will start targeting Striped Bass and Bluefish for the rest of the season.  It should only get better in the coming weeks and November is almost booked with only two dates remaining.

It was Albie Mayhem! Video from the trip: vimeo.com/239233989

I had Bruce Connor from Illinois on a 5-hour Fall Striped Bass charter and we worked a variety of areas.  We started working the back with live bait and Bruce hooked a couple of monster Bluefish to 16 pounds keeping a smaller one for the table.  We were able to pick a 25-inch Striped Bass amongst the Bluefish, which was harvested with a NJSBBP tag.  As the bite died, we got into some bird action with False Albacore busting the surface.  Bay Anchovies/Rainfish were being sprayed as the Albacore rocketed through the schools.  We played with the Albacore for the remainder of the trip as they burned drags on metals and our hand-tied teasers.  It was literally a non-stop bite for 3 solid hours.  Great job by Bruce who went home with some meat and sore arms.

On all of our Fall Striped Bass charters,  we provide “live spot” on every charter which are included at no charge.  Just a reminder, we have our allotted 50 Striped Bass Bonus Tags from the state of NJ for the season and we be using them till the end of the season.

Reel Reaction Sportfishing Fishing Report

It’s been a little while, but the fishing is starting to heat up as long as the water temperatures keep dropping.  On the charter front, the transitional time is starting to pass and I’m seeing more Striped Bass starting to cooperate although it’s early morning or late evening.  I have been kayaking during the late night hours and have been hooking up regularly on Striped Bass, we just need them to start biting during the daylight hours which will occur as the water temps. drop.  We will start targeting Striped Bass/Bluefish in the next few weeks and through the rest of the season.  On our mid-October, November, and December Striped Bass charters,  we provide “live spot” on every charter which are included at no charge.  Just a reminder, I picked up my allotted 50 Striped Bass Bonus Tags from the state of NJ for the season and we be using them from September through December.  With school in session, I’m running weekends and weekday afternoons starting at 230pm.

This past Friday afternoon I had Jutta Locker and her daughter Jessica from Utica, NY on a 4hr Bay & Inlet trip.  We started working a channel close to the inlet drifting live Peanut Bunker and working soft plastics.  With no takers, we moved to the inlet which was fishable.  We drifted live and fresh baits, and both clients hooked into Blues 7 to 10 pounds.  The bite only lasted about a 1/2 hour, and quickly died as the brown water moved in.  We continued to work different areas getting only subtle bites which were most likely snapper Blues.  The Coast Guard graced us in the last 10 minutes of the charter to perform a routine safety check.  We PASSED!  Nice job by both clients on a rather tough day!

We will start targeting Striped Bass in the next few weeks through the rest of the season.  On our mid-October, November, and December Striped Bass charters,  we provide “live spot” on every charter which are included at no charge.  Just a reminder, We have our allotted 50 Striped Bass Bonus Tags from the state of NJ for the season and we be using them from September through December.  With school in session, I’m running weekends and weekday afternoons starting at 230pm.

Reel Reaction Sportfishing – Fishing Report 9/15

Wow, what a great Fluke season as we put a ton of keepers across the deck of the Jenny Lynn and I would like to “thank” all of my summer clients for making it possible.  The winds and weather have not been so cooperative so far for the month, hopefully it gets better.  September is a transitional month offering cooler water temperatures and signaling the start of the migration.  There are some Albacore and Bonita within distance and we are available to target these the rest of the month.  In October, November, and December, we will be targeting Striped Bass and I provide 20-30 “live spot” on every charter which are included at no charge.  Just a reminder, I picked up my allotted 50 Striped Bass Bonus Tags from the state of NJ for the season and we be using them from September through December.  These tags allow us to harvest 24 to 28 inch Striped Bass.  With school in session, I’m running weekends and weekday afternoons starting at 230pm.

This past week I had repeat client Bruce Connor of Illinois and his daughter Emma of Washington DC on a 5 hr Bay & Inlet charter, which was supposed to be an inlet/ocean trip. With higher than expected winds of 15 to 20 knots, we stayed in the backbay and were only able to work part of the inlet as the conditions were very tough. We didn’t catch a large quantity due to the conditions, but managed Fluke (released due to regulations), Sea Bass (released due to regulations), Sea Robins, Triggerfish, and a 36-inch Bluefish. Great job by both anglers on a very challenging day!!

LBI Fishing – Reel Reaction Charters Fishing Report

In case you were wondering: Fluke still bite during eclipses!

Sorry for the delay in reports as I have been out on the water nearly everyday – in fact this past week had us on the water 7 trips in 5 days.  This has been one EPIC year as we are very close to eclipsing 200 keepers for the season!!  This week had some big fish hitting decks of the JENNY LYNN over 7 pounds which were all caught on the bucktail.  I picked up my allotted 50 Striped Bass Bonus Tags from the state of NJ for the season and already have 4 bookings in November.  With school starting, I will run weekdays afternoons through November, in addition to weekends.  Reminder:  Weekday afternoons and weekends through November and we are now starting to book up for our Fall Striped Bass fishery.

Our website or facebook page has all of the updated fishing reports from our charters, so please check them out.  LIKE us on FACEBOOK.

Here are a few from this past week:

I had return clients Rob P and his father Bill of North Jersey out on a 4hr Bay/Inlet charter. We started working the inlet for Bluefish as there was a little birdplay just outside. Once the Bluefish bite died, we worked some of the same areas as I did during last Thursday’s charter (Friday’s charter was cancelled due to weather). The father and son team worked the S&S BigEye bucktails to produce close to 30 Fluke with 4 keepers (19.5, 19. 18, 18). One of the throwbacks was previously tagged by Monmouth University.

I had Village Harbor Fishing Club member Ed Valitutto and member Alan Goracy along with their grandchildren Chaytan, Nicholas, Vincent, and Jacoby for a 4hr Bay/Inlet charter. The boys were siked about fishing and they also had their eclipse glasses. We had much more challenging conditions with strong tide and stronger South winds than my morning charter. But the group caught over 30 Fluke on the S&S BigEye bucktail and boxed 4 keepers (20, 19, 19, 18). We fished a variety of areas and the boys and grandfathers did a great job! 11yr old Nick Rossi was the high hook catching the most fish along with 2 keepers himself.

Tough day with the winds for return clients Jason Black, his 4yr old son Tyler, and his friend Mike Weinstein and 6yr old daughter Belle who were on a 4hr Bay&Inlet charter. This trip was more about letting the kids have some fun catching. We did manage to put a solid 19 inch Fluke in the cooler among the 20 shorts. With about a 1/2 hour left in the trip, I picked up Tyler’s younger brother Seth and Belle’s younger sister Alice for a boat ride near Viking Village’s Commercial fleet. Great job for a rather tough morning!

I had new client Mike Herman of NYC out with his 10year old daughter Dani for a 4hr Bay/Inlet charter. Dani never fished for Fluke, but she was a quick learner jigging the S&S BigEye bucktail for two keeper Fluke (18, 18.5 inches). The father-daughter team caught a good number of Fluke with a throwback Sea Bass. We worked a variety of spots in the backbay and some “earlier season” areas are producing with the cooler water temperatures. Great job by both anglers who were new to bucktailing.

I had new client Nicholas Theyer of Wisconsin, his wife Debra, and their 3 boys (Luke-age 9, Ben-age 7, Matthew-age 3) on a 4hr Bay & Inlet charter. We worked areas around the inlet in depths close to 20 feet to produce a decent amount of Fluke. This was the family’s first time fishing for Fluke and learning how to jig bucktails. 9-yr old Luke caught 2 Keepers (19.5, 21 inches) while jigging the S&S BigEye bucktail. 7-yr old Ben had another nice fish on, but in his excitement brought too quickly to the surface and unfortunately lost it before it could be netted. The family did a great job for their first time Fluke fishing.

I had return clients Dan Unger of Ship Bottom, his son Danny, and Art Diebel of Jackson with his son Bruce on a 5hr Ocean charter. As we approached the inlet, it was a little a more sporty than what the marine forecast indicated so we headed to a closer wreck. The crew caught a few shorts and 2 keepers (18, 22.5). With it finally laying down, we headed to one of my favorite snags and they added 3 more keepers to cooler including Art’s 7 pounder. The team ended with 5 solid keepers (27, 22.5, 20, 19, 18). All were caught on the S&S BigEye bucktail tipped with artificial and natural baits.

I had return clients Rob P and his buddy Matt out on a 5hr Ocean charter. We worked some of the same snags as my morning charter and got right on the fish. They did catch a lot more throwbacks, but landed 4 nice Fluke (27inch, 24, 19.5, 19). Rob landed his biggest Fluke to date at 27 inches weighing just over 7 pounds. All were caught on the S&S BigEye bucktail and they were pounding them. Thanks to Stanley Gola for producing such a quality product.

LBI Fluke – Reel Reaction Charters Fishing Report

Fluke still remains “on-fire” with the Ocean producing much better action as compared to the bay.  For example, we had a 3 man limit of 9 keeper Fluke to 25.5 inches in just 2 hours and 20 minutes!!  Epic Fishing to say the least!!  I understand some get sea-sick and have to stay in the bay, but I highly recommend running to the Ocean as there tends to be more quality fish and less short fish.  The bay bite is still good for the young ones in terms of action with most trips producing a steady 30 to 40 fish, but only 2 to 5 keepers.  Although we haven’t been targeting them, the jetties are still producing Bluefish, Striped Bass, and even some small Weakfish further off.  Reminder: We continue to run 7 days a week until September and we are now starting to book our Fall Striped Bass trips.

I had return clients Eric Haase, his wife Mary, and their friends Craig Fordyce and his girlfriend Caitlyn Torres on a 4hr Bay/Inlet trip. We had very tough conditions with higher than predicted winds, and wind-against tide situations at quite a few spots. But the charter stuck with it and with repeated drifts the crew caught over 30 Fluke with 5 keepers to 22.5 inches on bucktails. Awesome job for a challenging day!

I had return client Tom Dillon Jr and his cousin Mike Kelly of North Jersey on a 4hr Bay/Inlet charter. Tom’s dad was supposed to go, but got caught up with work so Tommy’s cousin jumped on. We worked some of the same areas as last week’s trip and had steady activity at most of the spots. The two released over 25 Fluke with very close to 18 inches, but they were able to box 3 keepers at 18, 19, 19.5 inches. Nice Job!! I look forward to seeing them for our fall Striped Bass fishery.

I had return client Tim Murphy and his son Kevin of Jamison, PA out on a 4hr Bay/Inlet trip. With a brief discussion prior to the trip, the father-son team opted for the ocean. Great choice, as we limited out on 9 keeper Fluke to 25.5 inches in 2 hours and 20 minutes. Tim was the high hook catching the most and two biggest fish at 25.5 and 24.5 inches. All fish were caught on bucktails and were quality sized (18, 18.5, 19, 19, 20, 20.5, 23, 25.5, 24.5).  Great job by the guys and look forward to seeing them in November for Striped Bass.

In the afternoon, I had return client Erik Lundbeck, his son Axel, nephew Arthur and Arthur’s girlfriend Ana Paden on a 4hr Bay/Inlet trip. We started working the inlet area, but had strong tidal current and winds which made it challenging to say the least. With success in the morning, we ran to the same Ocean area but could only muster 2 keeper Fluke (19, 21 inches) among shorts. We had much quicker drifting conditions and many more Brown sharks in the area. We did see one small, what appeared to be a 2.5-3ft Blacktip shark in the area. 10yr old Axel did end up hooking up with a 4-5 foot Brown shark that ended up hitting his short fluke on the way up. Tougher conditions, but still pretty good action for the crew!

And to close out the week, I had new client Steven Hartley, his wife Debbie Edmiston, and her son Tristan of Philadelphia, Pa on a 4hr Bay/Inlet trip. We started working some of the same bay areas as the day prior and had to weed through the shorts to find keepable fish. After some moving around, they trio found 2 keepers at 19 and 20 inches. Good job for their first time bucktailing!
