Hi Flier Open Boat Tuna

Do you know why I have not posted any tuna pics this season? Because I suck. I am 0 for 4. It’s what is known in fishing as not being able to catch your ass with your hands. Phew! That feels better. As a baseball fan, I know that slumps are a real thing and most get past it. I think I could get past it.

With that said, I know a place that is holding some 60 to 80 pound bluefin. It is in the 25 mile range. No trolling, we will be drifting with bait, really good bait that we will catch ourselves on the fishing grounds. You want to fish with me right now. I’m so hungry for a tuna and bait fishing is my best game. Also, the weather and sea conditions are looking really good.

Thurs July 20 and Fri July 21 4AM to 2PM. $350 person. 4 people max. All fish are shared. Everything is provided, just bring whatever you like to eat and drink, I have the rest.

These dates and any dates are always available for your private charter to fish the bay, inshore, or offshore. We are booked already for Sat and Sun July 22 and 23.

Call right up until “go time”, sometimes there is a spot open.

Hope to see you on board.

Hi Flier Open Boat Tuna

There are bluefin tuna on the mid range grounds now. We only need to run 25 to 35 miles. My favorite kind of fishing: daytime tuna on bait and jigs! No need for the big gold reels. We use light 30 class conventionals and spinners. We will have the trolling gear on board, but hope not to use it.

Marine forecast looks good for the next few days. Sailing Open Boat or Charter Mon July 10, Tues July 11, and Wed July 12. 4AM to 2PM. $350 person. 4 people max. All fish are shared. Everything is provided: rods, bait, jigs, fish cleaning. Just bring whatever you like to eat and drink.

We are also available on these dates or any day for your private charter, inshore or offshore. Inshore we are targeting bluefish and fluke, with a few stripers mixed in at the inlet jetty.

Give me a call to reserve a spot. Hope to see you on board!

Hi Flier Open Boat Tuna

The yellowfin are now in our range. 40 to 60 lb fish on the jig and troll. 60 plus miles each way. Friday and Saturday both look like good weather days to get offshore. Low velocity winds. We will be trolling, jigging, and bait fishing, whichever gives us the best chance.

Sailing Open Boat Tuna Fri July 7 and Sat July 8, 3AM to 3PM, $450 person, 4 people max, all fish are shared.

Call me on my cell below to reserve a spot.

These dates and any dates are also available for your private charter, as well. Inshore or offshore. We are currently catching blues with a few stripers mixed in at the inlet jetty along with fluke in the back bay.

Hope to see you on board!

Dave

Hi Flier Open Boat Trips

The weather looks good for Monday July 3 and Tuesday July 4 so we will be running Open Boat trips on these dates. Headed to Barnegat Ridge to try for bluefin tuna, albacore, sharks, or any species that is willing to cooperate with us. We will be primarily trolling as this is our best shot at a tuna, but I always have bait and jigs on board, as well.

5AM to 1PM each day. $300 person. 4 people max. All fish are shared. These dates, or any dates, are also available for your private charter to fish in the bay, inlet, or ocean, as well. We are currently catching blues and fluke in the bay and inlet.

Hope everyone has a safe and fun holiday weekend!

Hi Flier Open Boat Tuna

Thursday and Friday look good for venturing offshore in search of tuna. The wind is under 10 knots each day. That should make for a very comfortable ocean. The life we are looking for is in the 50 to 60 mile range from our inlet. Whales, porpoise, and birds. We will be primarily trolling. If conditions dictate throwing poppers or jigging, we have that arsenal on board, as well. The Hi Flier is equipped with a Garmin Sirius/XM weather station so we can see any storm cells as they are born. This gives us the ability to run around them instead of through them. We have a 6 man Viking survival raft and an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) that alerts all search and rescue aircraft and vessels. These are all things we carry and hope to never use. We have bean bag chairs to crash out in for the rides out and back.

Sailing Open Boat or Charter Thursday June 29 and Friday June 30. 4AM to 4PM. $450 person. 4 people max. All fish are shared. The best way to contact me about reserving a spot is to call me on my cell below.
We are also targeting stripers, blues, and fluke in the inlet and bay if you would like to book a charter for these dates or any day.

Hope to see you on board!

Hi Flier Open Boat Blues and Fluke

We will be running Open Boat or charter for Sat June 17 (two spots left), Sun June 18, and Mon June 19. We have been connecting with 2 to 4 lb blues in the bay trolling plugs and casting topwater lures. We are also catching fluke in the channels jigging with Gulp. There has been a good ratio of keeper fluke this season. Everything is on light tackle. There is a chance at stripers when we are in the inlet, as well.
6:30AM to 12:30PM, $175 person, 4 people max, all fish are shared. Call to reserve a spot.
The pics below are my son Max. We took the Lo Flier (he hates that name), our 16 ft aluminum bass boat out to break in the new motor yesterday (Wed). There was a lot of bird play and blues breaking water. I am hoping that holds up through these trips.

Hi Flier Open Boat Trips….Stripers, Blues, Fluke

We are catching lots of bluefish and quite a few tog at the inlet jetty that seem to love our striper bait, but the tog are out of season, so we have to release them. The blues are mostly 2 to 4 pounders with some bigger ones mixed in, like the 10 pounder below that we found in 4 feet of water in the back bay. Trolling SP Minnows and Crystal Minnows, we troll until we hook up and then while one person fights the fish, everyone else starts casting topwater lures that are rigged and ready in the bow holders. We are starting to mix in some fluke fishing to round off the catch. Plenty of action on light tackle spinning gear.

Sailing Open Boat or Charter Fri, Sat, and Sun, June 2, 3, and 4.

Friday: 11AM to 5PM

Saturday: 6AM to Noon

Sunday: 6AM to Noon

All Open Boat trips are  $175 person, 4 people max, all fish are shared.

Hi Flier Stripers, Blues, and Fluke…..and Giant Bluefin Tuna

We will be sailing Open Boat or Charter Fri, Sat, and Sun this Memorial day weekend. Targeting stripers, blues, and fluke. All three species are very active right now in the bay and inlet. We will be using a mix of bait and lures on light spinning tackle.

Open Boat Trips:

Fri May 26 11AM to 5PM

Sat May 27 and Sun May 28  8AM to 2PM

$175 person, 4 people max, all fish are shared.

We are gearing up for a shot at the Giant Bluefin Tuna that have been holding steady to the north of us for a few weeks now. It is a troll bite. We have rod and reel outfits that are specifically designed to fight these fish standup style. It’s a 45 mile run to the grounds for us, so about a 2 1/2 hour run each way. We only sail in very calm water. Sat, Sun, and Mon’s will be the days we will be looking at for these trips.

Here are some of the particulars: $750 person, 3 people max, anything over 73 inches belongs to the boat. Anything under 73 inches we cut up for everyone on board to share. Obviously this is not for everyone. The chances are much greater of us not even hooking up than catching a giant. That’s not to say we are not properly geared for it or that we won’t be committed to catching one, more than anything else we will ever do. It’s just the reality of giant tuna fishing. I was the deck hand for one of the top Giant Bluefin Tuna captains in the history of the sport, Bob Pisano out of Belmar, NJ. This guy was the Babe Ruth of giant fishing. He fished for them in the 1970’s when they were not worth anything. The lobster boats would pay .25 cents a pound for them to use as bait. He continued his pursuit well into the 2000’s. I was fortunate enough to be his mate for three seasons in the late 1980’s. We chased these fish from Brielle, NJ to Cape Cod, MA and back from June to Oct. Our best season we had 7 fish. During one stretch, we fished 21 days in a row out of Point Judith, RI and the rod never went off. Then, in the next 4 days, we boated 3. I am in the million chunk club, an exclusive membership to those that have cut enough butterfish and bunker chunks to fill a baseball stadium. I have line cuts on my fingers so deep they have never healed from rigging trolling baits with waxed thread just for this fishery. I have $5,000 invested in three rod and reel outfits specifically for these fish that only get used a few times a year, along with a few thousand dollars in tackle, lures, harpoons, gaffs, darts, etc. I go out of my way to tell you this because when the day comes, when lightning finally strikes, and we deck a Giant Bluefin Tuna, any financial reward is returned to the boat and captain, not to those that were lucky enough to pick the most exciting day of fishing you can ever experience. What I can offer you is a chance to be part of a crew that could make this happen. We will need you guys to rotate on the rod, if you want to leader and harpoon the fish, keep the guy on the rod hydrated. Look for whales and birds while we are searching. It’s a team effort that lands one of these remarkable fish.

You can call or email me if you have any interest in a trip like this.
